Today, segments of the disassembled dome still lay in the grass across the highway alongside oleander and scrub, lashed down with a white rope.Not for long: Melbourne Beach officials have set a Jan. 31 deadline for the owner, Bob Nolan, 84, to move the Space Race relic elsewhere. Nolan and others fear the 1,100-pound curved contraption will get sold as scrap metal or trucked to the dump."We don't want it destroyed. We don't want a negative to happen," said Nolan, a retired Air Force captain who has championed the dome-preservation campaign."My goal is, because this is such an important piece of history, that we preserve this for future generations. In my view, 99 percent of the people in the United States have never seen anything that has anything to do with NASA, except on TV," Nolan said.Dome pieces and associated hardware sit idle a stone's throw from the Melbourne Beach Old Town Hall History Center. Brevard County owns this property just south of the Flutie Athletic Complex. The town leases the museum site.Grassroots plans to put the locally nicknamed "Radome" on public display have never come to fruition since a crane lowered it to the ground from its three-story perch in January 2008.Nolan, county and town officials have spent years discussing Radome reconstruction and maintenance costs, hurricane liability risks, pouring an 18-by-18-foot concrete pad, launching a "Friends of the Tracking Dome" fundraising organization, engineering studies, permitting and zoning matters.On Dec. 17, the Melbourne Beach Town Commission voted 4-1 to discontinue any efforts on the dome project. Mayor Jim Simmons, who worked in the space program for 33 years, cast the dissenting vote.Then last week, Town Manager Jamie Titcomb issued Nolan the dome-removal deadline.After Jan. 31, Melbourne Beach code enforcement officials will relocate the dome to an undetermined location, Titcomb said.Nolan, who took ownership of the dome in December 2012, responded by dropping off a letter at Town Hall claiming that the town would owe him $37,343 if the dome is destroyed.Bob NolanChuck Least, a New York snowbird who is helping Nolan with the dome restoration project, and Crystal Cain, a Melbourne Beach History Center Board member, hope a "caretaker organization" hears of the Radome's plight and reassembles the semicircular structure elsewhere to educate the public.The Melbourne Beach tracking station was part of the Eastern Range communications network, managed by the 45th Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base.Inside the dome, a Recording Optical Tracking Instrument — a telescope with a 24-inch aperture that took high-resolution photos of objects in space — operated in tandem with optical systems at PAFB, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.The telescope itself is now displayed at the Air Force Space & Missile Museum at the Air Force station.The original dome was likely installed between 1950 and 1955, Cain said. The Radome was a replacement that was used throughout the shuttle era.Demolition workers cut the dome into eight slices while razing the tracking station. Nowadays, Cain said startled history center visitors have spotted rattlesnakes amid these stacked segments.According to Town Hall documents, the assembled Radome measures 16 feet in diameter and stands 10 feet, 8 inches high. Each aluminum slice is coated with a fiberglass exterior shell and weighs 125 to 130 pounds."If it's not out of here by the 31st, it's going to go into the landfill. Following denials by two former home ministers, PKR today questioned if the incumbent minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was the first to unilaterally write to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said Zahid should explain the procedure for a minister to write to another agency."Is there a standard operating procedure for cabinet ministers to write letters to any agency or organisation on the advice of lawyers who are not the Attorney-General?" Fahmi said in a statement today.Zahid has been embroiled in controversy ever since the South China Morning Post reported that he had sent a letter to FBI deputy director Mark F. Guiliano last December to clear gambling kingpin Paul Phua of triad involvement.Paul was detained in Las Vegas last year in connection with illegal gambling along with his son and is facing charges in a US court.But in his letter, Zahid said Phua had assisted Putrajaya with matters concerning national security.Since the matter came to light, Zahid has been criticised for acting unilaterally without first consulting the police or the Attorney-General's Chambers.When Zahid finally broke his silence on the issue, he said sending the letter was well within his authority, adding that his predecessors had done the same.But, former Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein denied writing such correspondence to the FBI during his tenure between 2009 and 2013.Hishammuddin's denial prompted veteran DAP politician Lim Kit Siang to question if Zahid was lying.Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, who was home minister from 2008 to 2009, also denied sending letters unilaterally to the FBI today.Zahid has refused to reveal how Phua had assisted Putrajaya on issues of national security, invoking the Official Secrets Act 1972. – January 23, 2014.

Beijing rules Chinese tourists still need to apply for visa, says minister

Chinese nationals visiting Malaysia still have to apply for a visa despite the waiver, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 23, 2015. Chinese nationals visiting Malaysia still have to apply for a visa although the 80 yuan (RM46.45) visa fee has been waived, due to a ruling by Beijing, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said.“The Chinese government does not permit their nationals to travel abroad without a visa. That's why they still have to apply for one," he said.He was responding to criticism by Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) president Hamzah Rahmat that the visa fee-free move was only a "half-hearted" gesture.Hamzah said paying for a visa was not the main issue as the amount is peanuts for most Chinese tourists who are the world’s biggest spenders.He said the hassle of having to apply and wait for a visa could be a deterrent.“We cannot make a unilateral decision. It is not possible.“The decision must be a bilateral one," Wan Junaidi said.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the visa fee-free on Tuesday in the revised budget.It is a strategy to lure some 2.3 million Chinese visitors this year to boost the national economy which is experiencing a slowdown due to plunging global oil prices and a weakening ringgit.Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the visa fee waiver could be implemented before the Chinese New Year.Wan Junaidi said the waiver would not complicate the police's work in tracking Chinese Muslim militants using Malaysia as a transit point en route to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State.“We have asked China's vice-minister of Public Security (Meng Hongwei) and he has agreed to supply us information on their nationals whom they suspect are involved in terrorism before they travel to Malaysia," he said.The request was made during a meeting between Meng and Zahid in Putrajaya on Wednesday.“They promised to supply us the information so that there is no conflict where police are concerned," he added.Wan Junaidi said police were aware and had been keeping tabs on suspected Chinese militants and actions have been taken against “these suspected terrorists".“We have arrested some and deported them back," he added.Zahid told reporters after the meeting that more than 300 Chinese militants have used Malaysia as a transit point to join the Islamic State.He said the problem was serious because of the ties at the international level between terrorists in China and those in other Southeast Asian countries. – January 23, 2015.
