สายลับสามมิติย้อนหลัง - เมื่อวันปิดภาคเรียนมาถึงเด็ก ๆ พากันกระโดดโลดเต้นด้วยความดีใจ แต่ตังตังกลับนั่งเหงาเบื่อหน่าย มองเพื่อนๆ ที่คุณพ่อคุณแม่ทะยอยมารับกลับบ้าน ตังตังนั่งรอตฤณ (ปีเตอร์ เดนแมน) น้าชายไม่เอาไหนที่เป็นไม้เบื่อไม้เมามารับเป็นคนสุดท้ายของโรงเรียน ตฤณเผลอหลับพาตังตังลงรถไฟฟ้าผิดสถานี และเดินหลงมาเจอร้านขายของเก่าที่มีแต่ของแปลก ๆ อาทิ กระจกวิเศษ ดาบโบราณ ซึ่งตังตังเคยเห็นแต่ในจอทีวีเท่านั้น ตังตังสะดุดตากับแว่นสามมิติรูปร่างแปลกตาอันหนึ่ง เจ้าของร้านบอกว่าทำมาจากกระจกทะลุมิติ เมื่อสวมใส่ทำให้เหมือนอยู่ในเหตุการณ์จริง ๆ ซึ่งเจ้าของร้านเตรียมส่งออเดอร์ให้กับลูกค้า

The AirAsia group is now the focus of many over talk that senior executives are leaving the popular budget carrier. – Reuters pic, January 28, 2015.Following the tragedy involving Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 which crashed into the Java Sea last month, the popular budget carrier is in the limelight in Malaysia over talk that senior executives are leaving the AirAsia group.The New Straits Times reported today that AirAsia X chief executive Azran Osman Rani, who was handpicked by group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes to helm the long-haul subsidiary of the budget carrier, is serving out his notice.The English-language daily reported that Azran, when contacted, did not confirm or deny his departure.But, he was quoted as saying that he was staying put in Air Asia X, which he added was expected to turn around.He added that he was excited about progress in AirAsia X after what he termed as an “exceptional" 2014, given market conditions and the incidents in the Malaysian aviation industry.National carrier Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared under mysterious circumstances on March 8 last year when the aircraft, carrying 239 people, disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.It is believed to have ended in the Indian Ocean although international search efforts have failed to find any wreckage.On July 17, MAS suffered another blow when flight MH17 from Amsterdam was shot down over Ukrainian air space, killing all 298 people on board.According to Azran, demand from China, one of its biggest markets, had softened, but he added that this trend had turned around."Things are working out well for AirAsia X. We are excited to show the progress that we have achieved in the fourth quarter of 2014," he said, adding that the results will be announced in February.The report, quoting sources, mentioned that AirAsia group had said there would be major changes at AirAsia X given the losses suffered in the past two years.AirAsia is also said to be facing pressure from intense competition in Southeast Asia amid weak market sentiments."The two airlines will be consolidated to create a larger operating airline group and there will be many redundant positions once the exercise is completed," a source was quoted as saying.Two other people rumoured to be leaving are AirAsia X chief financial officer Chew Eng Loke and legal head Hanie Izawatie.The New Straits Times reported that former president and CEO of Air Canada Robert Milton, who has been a director with AirAsia Bhd since 2013, is said to be playing a more prominent role in the overall operation.Air Asia X chair Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, when contacted, said there would be a board meeting this week where several issues would be discussed."Just wait for whatever comes up after the meeting and the announcements that follow," she said when asked about talk of Azran and other senior staff leaving.Azran was appointed CEO in July 2010 on a three-year contract, which was renewed for another three years until July 4, 2016.He was previously senior director of business development in satellite television company Astro.Chew has been CFO of AirAsia X since September 1 while Hanie has been with them since June 2008. – January 28, 2015.

Rights group slams police raid of cartoonist Zunar’s office

Political satirist and cartoonist Zunar, who is currently in London, tweeted today that police had raided his office to confiscate some of his publications. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 28, 2015.Human Rights Watch Asia has slammed the Malaysian police's move to raid the office of satire cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Alhaque, better known as Zunar, and to seize copies of his books as a further assault on freedom of expression.The watchdog's deputy director Phil Robertson said the raid and seizure which took place today while Zunar was abroad, was "shocking and outrageous" as there was "absolutely no justification for this act of censorship"."Zunar's books should be returned to him and any consideration of charges against him immediately dropped," he said in a statement today.Two policemen had gone to Zunar's office, which shares the same premises as PKR's party organ, Suara Keadilan, at around 10.30am this morning. About an hour later, four more police officers came and they proceeded to seize a total of 149 books.The books were the English and Bahasa Malaysia versions of "Conspiracy to imprison Anwar" and "Pirates of the Carry BN".Zunar in a brief statement later said the confiscation of the books were done under the Printing Presses Act, Sedition Act and Penal Code, and that he would be called to the police station upon his return to Malaysia.Robertson said Malaysia's use of the Sedition Act had raised fundamental questions about whether the government was seeking to cement its power through police action to silence dissenters.He urged people who cared about human rights and democracy in Malaysia to stand up and demand that the government stopped using "wrecking ball tactics" on activists and members of the political opposition."Human Rights Watch proudly gave a Hellman Hammett award for defenders of free expression to Zunar in 2011, and we will continue to stand by him as he fights for his rights," he added.Zunar, who is current in London and scheduled to speak at universities there, had earlier today tweeted the news about his office being raided and the books seized.He is the subject of an ongoing police investigation after being detained in 2010 under the Sedition Act. – January 28, 2015.

About $32,000 apparently, if you want one that's unique. A new Swiss company called Erfolgswelle offers to create a list of globally unique baby names and pare them down with clients until they pick one, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "We follow a creation process that takes around 100 hours," company CEO Marc Hauser tells BuzzFeed. For $32,000, copywriters cook up names, historians ensure their uniqueness, translators check they won't offend in any language, and lawyers make sure they aren't trademarked. Then, presto, you get a list from which to choose five favorites. Erfolgswelle will even send your faves to 780 people who pick their faves. Yet "the family is always in charge—they have the rudder in their hands," says Hauser.Once a favorite is picked (Blue Ivy and Apple are taken, people!) the company writes up a mythology and history of the name. "Based on the elements of the new name, we create a story with a positive message," Hauser says. "That's why all the parts of the name need a positive message in it." He promises a personal touch, too, telling ABC News that each name must fit "within the family's culture and background." He won't reveal their client list, baby names, or tricks of the trade, but tells the Daily Mail that the name must "roll off the tongue," so, for example, no first name will end "with the same letter that the surname begins with." Coroner rules police, other inmates to blame for detainee’s death

Lawyer Eric Paulsen (right) talking to media with his clients, Karuna Nithi's mother Katijah Bebee and family members. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Nazir Sufari, January 28, 2015.A coroner today ruled that policemen and inmates were responsible for the death of an unemployed man while he was detained at the Tampin district police headquarters in Negri Sembilan two years ago.Coroner Datuk Jagjit Singh said the cause of death of P.Karuna Nithi was caused by 49 multiple injuries by blunt objects including physical assault, abuse and unlawful acts by persons unknown, inclusive of police officers and other detainees where Karuna Nithi was held.Jagjit, who is a Sessions Court judge in Seremban, said in his verdict that there was failure or omission to provide the necessary medical care and attention required by Karuna Nithi."There was also failure of the police officers to stop other detainees from abusing Karuna Nithi in the police lock-up."This is the second verdict this month where police have been found responsible for the death of detainees in police custody.On January 16, coroner Ahmad Bache held police responsible for the death of lorry driver P.Chandran through their omission to provide him with timely medical assistance.Chandran had been detained at the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur on September 6, 2012 and was held for four days before his untimely death.Jagjit said having gone through all the evidence, he was satisfied that the cause of Karuna Nithi's death was due to a combination of unlawful acts and omissions by person or persons unknown."The deceased was a healthy adult with no life threatening diseases when he entered the lock-up but ended up dead three days later with 49 external injuries," he said.He said a custodial death with that number of injuries should have "rung alarm bells from the word go".Jagjit said he rejected the evidence of forensic pathologist Dr Sharifah Safoorah Syed Alwee after extensive examination of the shortcomings in her testimony."She had erroneously found that the cause of death was due to 'fatty change in the liver'. But this cannot be so when the deceased had 49 external injuries," he said.Jagjit said closed circuit television footages from the police station clearly revealed Karuna Nithi was beaten by other inmates and the cops on duty were privy to what happened.He said some policemen had also contributed to the beating, harassment and bullying based on evidence adduced from the CCTV.Jagjit admitted that Karuna Nithi was a difficult detainee, adding "but that was no reason to ill-treat him"."He was repeatedly transferred from one cell to another because he was having hallucinations, raving and ranting," he added.The judge said a policeman also testified that Karuna Nithi’s welfare was neglected because it was thought that he was only pretending to be sick while in the lock-up.Karuna Nithi, 42, was found unconscious inside his cell by a policeman who went to check on him at about 6pm on June 1, 2013.He was rushed to the district hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.Police had detained him at about 5.30pm on May 28 after his wife lodged a report that he had assaulted her following a quarrel at their home at Rumah Rakyat Taman Muhibbah in Gemencheh.Karuna Nithi had also lodged a report earlier in the day admitting he had assaulted his wife because he could not take her verbal abuse.He was taken to the Tampin magistrate’s court the following morning where a four-day remand order was issued.On May 31, he was charged with causing hurt and was allowed a RM4,000 bail but was taken back to the lock-up because his family could not post the amount to secure his release.Police have maintained there was no physical abuse involved in his death although family members alleged there were fresh injuries on his body.Lawyer Eric Paulsen, who appeared for the family of Karuna Nithi, said this was yet another landmark verdict which the authorities must take serious notice of."The judge reiterated a Court of Appeal ruling last year that not a single person should die in a police lock-up. This is also a small victory for human rights," added Eric, who is also executive director for Lawyers for Liberty.He said Dr Sharifah was supposed to "speak for the dead person" but her findings were not justified.Co-counsel Dr Dheeraj Bhar, who was a medical doctor, said the rejection of Dr Sharifah's evidence had to do with her credibility as a professional."I hope the Malaysian Medical Council will look into this in light of what the judge  concluded," he added. – January 28, 2015

Bukan setiap merotan kesalahan jenayah

Peruntukan dicadangkan Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat (KPWKM) dalam Rang Undang-UndangKanak-Kanak baru bukanlah bermaksud setiap perbuatan merotan menjadi kesalahan jenayah. Sebaliknya, kementerian itu menjelaskan, apa yang dicadangkan dalam Rang Undang-undang itu ialah memasukkan peruntukan yang lebih terperinci mengenai tindakan yang boleh menyebabkan kecederaan fizikal atau mental kepada kanak-kanak, dan ini termasuklah perlakuan merotan. "Kementerian sedang meneliti dan memperhalusi cadangan untuk memasukkan peruntukan undang-undang yang lebih terperinci supaya apa-apa perbuatan kepada kanak-kanak sehingga menyebabkan kecederaan fizikal atau emosi kepada kanak-kanak merupakan suatu kesalahan jenayah yang boleh dikenakan hukuman penjara atau denda yang lebih tinggi. "Di samping itu, kementerian juga mempertimbangkan untuk mengadakan hukuman alternatif seperti khidmat masyarakat atau kaunseling atau kursus keibubapaan," demikian menurut kenyataan dikeluarkan Unit Komunikasi Korporat kementerian itu semalam. KPWKM menjelaskan bahawa tindakan memperhalusi undang-undang itu adalah selaras dengan cadangan terdahulu untuk memansuhkan Seksyen 91(1)(g) Akta Kanak-Kanak 2001 yang buat masa ini mahkamah dibenarkan untuk menjalankanhukuman sebatan ke atas kanak-kanak yang didapati bersalah. Beberapa media hari ini melaporkan kenyataan menteri KPWKM, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim sebagai berkata, merotan anak bakal menjadi satu kesalahan jenayah sekiranya undang-undang baharu untuk menggantikan Akta Kanak-Kanak 2001mendapat kelulusan parlimen. Ekoran laporan itu, beberapa pihak tampil meminta penjelasan serta menyarankan agar kementerian mengkaji semula sekiranya cadangan itu benar-benar mahu dilaksanakan. Dalam pada itu, kementerian turut menjelaskan cadangan untuk memansuhkan hukuman sebatan di peringkat mahkamah adalah selari dengan prinsip Konvensyen Mengenai Hak Kanak-Kanak (CRC). "Pada masa ini Seksyen 91(1)(g) Akta Kanak-Kanak 2001 membenarkan seseorang kanak-kanak lelaki dikenakan hukuman sebatan tidak lebih daripada 10 kali sebatan apabila disabitkan dengan kesalahan melakukan jenayah. Dalam hal ini, hukuman sebatan di mahkamah adalah berbeza dengan hukuman merotan sama ada di sekolah atau rumah.  "Hukuman sebatan di mahkamah dilakukan secara teratur mengikut prosedur yang ditetapkan undang-undang. Bagaimanapun, atas alasan perkembangan psikologi danselaras dengan CRC, kementerian bercadang untuk memansuhkan hukuman tersebut," menurut kenyataan itu. - Bernama

Race is a common column in Malaysian official forms, but calls have grown in recent weeks to do away with the column. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 26, 2015.In the wake of Sabah and Sarawak’s decision to drop the “lain-lain" (others) category in official forms, experts want Putrajaya to consider abolishing the race category altogether, saying it serves no purpose except to perpetuate racial divisions.
Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam (pic, right), chairman of the Centre for Public Policy Studies at the Asian Strategy and Leadership Insititute (Asli), said the race category was initially introduced to help the Bumiputeras, but it was now no longer relevant.“Originally, it was important for political and economic reasons in that there was this NEP (New Economic Policy) which wanted to identify Malays and Bumiputeras in order to give them a head start. But the basis for that argument is not so strong today.“Because, whereas the Malays were neglected in the past, over 55 years they have been given preference, and they have done very well. Even the NEM (New Economic Model) focuses on helping the bottom 40%, regardless of race," he told The Malaysian Insider.Saying the race category created artificial divisions that went against the national grain and caused disunity and polarisation, Ramon urged the government to phase out the entire practice.“Measure the pros and cons and see where we can start selectively to slowly phase out race and religious categorisation. After all, we are all Malaysians. What is the need to divide us?"He said there were cases where such categories were necessary, such as for research to identify ethnic groups that required policy changes to improve their quality of life.“But for passports and other documents, there’s no need for race or religion for that matter. Your race and religion are your personal matter.“When we have race and religion categorisation all the time, then our mindset is also racial and parochial. When are we going to stop this?"
Dr Lim Teck Ghee (pic, left) of the Centre for Policy Initiatives (CPI), said “very few countries" practise such racial distinctions in official forms, and Putrajaya should have very concrete reasons to continue this practice.“If you’re looking at international practice, it’s really unusual to have this. So I think it’s realistic to do away with the race category. It’s a reasonable request, going by international standards."He said if Putrajaya was concerned about instilling national unity and patriotism, abolishing the race category was a good step forward.“Once we put labels there, we are basically perpetuating racial divisions. So I think the onus is on the government to explain why it’s doing this. If exceptions need to be made, they must be justified."He added that some people may see the government as having sinister intentions for continuing such a practice.“They will ask, is the government wanting to be partial, biased on the basis of race? Why should race come into, for example, vehicle ownership, or when applying for licence?“Unless the government has some kind of agenda, there appears to be no good reason for this practice to be continued."On Wednesday, the Sabah government decided to drop the “lain-lain" category in official forms, after Sarawak did away with the category on January 18.Sabah State Reform Party chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan lauded the move, but said he preferred if the race and religion categories were taken out of government forms altogether to stop discrimination.He questioned the need for people to specify their race and religion, such as for employment-seeking purposes."If it is for a job application, shouldn’t one be judged by his or her merit, his or her education and working experience? What does religion or one’s race have to do with his or her ability to handle a task? It is irrelevant," he told news portal The Rakyat Post.“Why not go beyond this? We should start eliminating the two items from forms to reduce the existing racial and religious tensions affecting Malaysia," he said, adding that people should be encouraged to call themselves “Malaysian" in respect of the 1Malaysia concept.But state Speaker, Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said doing away with the race and religion columns would not solve the problem, and said it was more important for people to accept their differences and respect each other. – January 26, 2015.

Bekas pemain badminton kebangsaan Datuk Teh Kew San menggesa pemain muda supaya memanfaatkan peluang sedia ada serta perlu mengubah pemikiran bagi meningkatkan prestasi sukan badminton negara.

Beliau berkata mereka perlu meningkatkan stamina untuk bergerak seiring dengan pemain antarabangsa kerana corak permainan kini banyak berubah dan semakin pantas jika dibandingkan pada zaman kegemilangannya dahulu.

Beliau berkata jika mereka mengekalkan corak permainan yang sama, sukan badminton negara akan jauh ketinggalan.

"Ketika zaman saya, tiada kemudahan seperti yang ada hari ini. Biasanya, kami berlatih atas usaha kami sendiri kecuali jika ada kejohanan. Jika tidak, kami akan berlatih sesama sendiri.

"Sekarang, pemain muda bertuah, mereka ada kemudahan dan perlu menggunakannya sebaik mungkin," katanya kepada pemberita pada majlis sambutan ulang tahun kelahirannya yang ke-80, di sini malam ini.

Turut hadir, Presiden Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM) Tan Sri Tengku Mahaleel Tengku Ariff dan beberapa bekas pemain badminton kebangsaan iaitu Datuk Yew Cheng Hoe, Tan Aik Huang, Datuk Tan Yee Khan, Datuk Ng Boon Bee dan Datuk Billy Ng.

Teh berkata sebagai seorang pemain mereka perlu bersiap sedia sepenuhnya sebelum menghadapi sebarang kejohanan.

"Jika tidak bersedia, mereka tidak perlu menyertainya kerana ia akan memberi kesan kepada pemain itu sendiri," katanya.

Legenda badminton negara kelahiran Pulau Pinang itu telah memenangi  kejohanan All England dan merupakan ketua pasukan Piala Thomas Malaysia sebanyak tiga kali, selain memenangi beberapa kejohanan tempatan dan antarabangsa.

The planes landed safely as scheduled.Cooper said that out of an abundance of caution, passengers were bused to their gates from the airport's third runway. He provided no other details but said an investigation was underway.The website FlightAware.com showed Delta Flight 1061, a Boeing 737, was diverted to Phoenix Sunday afternoon. Transportation Security Administration spokesman Mike McCarthy confirmed the diversion but declined to state a reason. He referred calls to Dallas police. AirAsia's group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes wants regional aviation regulators for Southeast Asia. Palanivel persuades MIC’s Kumar to end hunger strike

Palanivel today.Palanivel's statement said his request was made for the “sake of MIC and Barisan Nasional’s image".“I am dealing with RoS (Registrar of Societies) and the validity of his appointment as the secretary-general of MIC will also be dealt with accordingly," the statement said.Earlier today, Datuk G. Kumaar Aamaan protested outside the RoS headquarters in Putrajaya while continuing to wait for a letter by the RoS to confirm his appointment as party secretary-general, a post he was appointed to by Palanivel.Kumaar's lawyer, T. Rajasekaran, said his client ignored a doctor's warning and the act was an effort by Kumaar to be recognised as the MIC secretary-general."Kumaar insists that he would continue his hunger strike until the director of the RoS upholds his appointment with him," said his lawyer.His hopes of getting the letter today were stalled when the RoS director said he would only meet Kumaar on Monday.Kumaar started his hunger strike at about 2pm yesterday.MIC is in crisis after the RoS found irregularities in the party polls and ordered it to conduct fresh elections.The RoS directive also sparked fears that failure to conduct fresh polls would result in the party's deregistration. – January 23, 2015.

Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors whose homes were affected by the recent floods are allowed to withdraw their savings from Account 2 to rebuild their home or buy a new one."For members who have never made a housing withdrawal and wish to rebuild their house destroyed by the floods can do so by making an application for withdrawal to Buy/Build House."The withdrawal is allowed if the first house had been sold or there was a disposal of ownership," EPF said in a statement.The fund said disposal of ownership means losing a house owned through an EPF withdrawal previously due to several reasons such as destroyed by a natural disaster or fire.To qualify for a withdrawal to build a second house, contributors must get a confirmation letter from the local council or village head that their house which was bought or built through the EPF was destroyed in the floods."EPF will conduct an evaluation to confirm the amount needed to buy or rebuild their house and check the balance in the members' Account 2."The right to make a withdrawal is subject to the other stipulated terms and conditions," said the statement.For further information, members can visit any EPF branch or log on to its website. – Bernama, January 23, 2015.

Kumar Aamaan, who is on a hunger strike outside the Registrar of Societies's (RoS) office in Putrajaya, is in danger of being hospitalised in the next few days, a doctor warned today.Dr T. Preveena, from Sri Permai polyclinic nearby, said if Kumar continued with the strike, he may go into shock because of dehydration as he had not taken any liquid or food since yesterday."He is fine for now. But he is having a little headache and his blood pressure is extremely high. He may suffer severe dehydration and go into shock in a couple of days," she said.One of the MIC members decided to contact the doctor for assistance after he appeared tired and weak from hunger.Kumar Aaman started his hunger strike at about 2 pm yesterday to protest against the RoS's decision which he received on Monday stating his appointment as MIC secretary-general was invalid. MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam yesterday also described the hunger strike launched by Kumaar as not “Malaysian".People's Progressive Party (PPP) president Tan Sri M. Kayveas, who visited Kumar today, said he was concerned regarding the RoS's indifference towards the situation."It is only fair that the RoS does not delay this and MIC members too should work with RoS."There must be good relationship between the RoS and the working party.
