Palanivel persuades MIC’s Kumar to end hunger strike

Datuk G. Kumar Aaman (second right) sits on the floor with his supporters at the Registrar of Societies in Putrajaya, outside Kuala Lumpur, today. – The Malaysian Insider by Najjua Zulkefli, January 23, 2015.MIC secretary-general's hunger strike comes to an end after being advised to do so by party president Datuk G. Palanivel today.Palanivel's statement said his request was made for the “sake of MIC and Barisan Nasional’s image".“I am dealing with RoS (Registrar of Societies) and the validity of his appointment as the secretary-general of MIC will also be dealt with accordingly," the statement said.Earlier today, Datuk G. Kumaar Aamaan protested outside the RoS headquarters in Putrajaya while continuing to wait for a letter by the RoS to confirm his appointment as party secretary-general, a post he was appointed to by Palanivel.Kumaar's lawyer, T. Rajasekaran, said his client ignored a doctor's warning and the act was an effort by Kumaar to be recognised as the MIC secretary-general."Kumaar insists that he would continue his hunger strike until the director of the RoS upholds his appointment with him," said his lawyer. His hopes of getting the letter today were stalled when the RoS director said he would only meet Kumaar on Monday.Kumaar started his hunger strike at about 2pm yesterday.MIC is in crisis after the RoS found irregularities in the party polls and ordered it to conduct fresh elections. The RoS directive also sparked fears that failure to conduct fresh polls would result in the party's deregistration. – January 23, 2015.
