Najib’s dismissal of Sirul’s claim over Altantuya murder ‘self-incriminating’, says Kit Siang

Lim Kit Siang questions how prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak can be sure there was no instruction to kill Altantuya Shaariibuu as claimed by convicted murderer Sirul Azhar Umar. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, February 19, 2015.Datuk Seri Najib Razak has come under fire for dismissing claims by the convicted killer of Altantuya Sharibuu that he had acted under orders, with a veteran DAP leader saying the prime minister's might have incriminated himself with the outburst.Lim Kit Siang said Najib's comments could also be exculpatory if he was saying that there were no such orders to former policeman Sirul Azhar Omar and his colleague Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri to murder the Mongolian model."The question that immediately arises is how Najib knows that the two convicted police commandos had not received any such orders from their superior to kill Altantunya and destroy evidence by blowing up her body using C4 explosives," Lim said in a statement today."He can say there was no such 'order' from him, but how could he say that there were no such 'orders' from other people? How can he be so sure?"Najib, when met by reporters at the MCA Chinese New Year celebrations today, rubbished claims by former police commando Sirul that he was ordered by "important people" to kill Altantuya."It's total rubbish, total rubbish," he said, shaking his head.Lim noted that since Sirul had admitted to the act of murdering Altantuya and insisted that he had received orders to do so, Najib's comments could instead be incriminating him in the murder."But Najib’s outburst could be self-incriminating, implying that he knew the circumstances leading to the murder of Altantuya by two police commandos acting under order," he said. This was echoed earlier by Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo, who urged Najib to reveal what he knew of the Altantuya murder, as his comments indicated the prime minister was privy to more details of the case."The prime minister today said that Sirul's claim that he acted under orders is utter rubbish. How does he know this? This pins him down to that question."If Sirul's claim isn't true, then what is? Najib may have just checkmated himself with that answer. Either he as prime minister, knows what happened or he doesn't," Gobind said.Meanwhile, Lim urged Najib to call for a "thorough, comprehensive and independent" investigation into the murder of the Mongolian woman, who had an affair with the prime minister's close confidante, Abdul Razak Baginda."Would Najib agree that it is a gross miscarriage of justice if Sirul and Azilah are sent to the gallows while the mastermind of Altantuya’s murder who had the motive to kill her and destroy evidence by blowing up her body with C4 explosives is allowed to get away scot-free?"I call on Najib to be in the forefront to institute a thorough, comprehensive, independent (even international) investigation into Altantuya’s murder, and to announce a reprieve of the death sentences for Sirul and Azila until the outcome of such investigations," he added. On Tuesday, Sirul, now detained in Australia, said he was under orders to kill Altantuya, and that the "real" murderers were still free."I was under orders. The important people with motive are still free," he told Malaysiakini in an interview.Sirul also said that his superior officer, then deputy superintendent Musa Safri, should have been called to give evidence in the Altantuya murder trial. At the time of the murder, Musa was the aide-de-camp of Najib, then the deputy prime minister."He should have been put on the witness stand by the prosecution," Sirul was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini. The 43-year-old also told the news portal that he never knew Altantuya or even Razak, a political analyst, who was acquitted with abetting the Mongolian's murder.Altantuya's father Dr Setev Shaariibuu had previously claimed that his daughter had come to Malaysia specifically to meet Najib. – February 19, 2015.
